WHAT IS EMV?

EMV is an interoperability standard for smartcard / IC and POS or Terminals with support for smartcards, in order to authenticate payments using credit or debit cards. The name EMV is an acronym for Europay MasterCard VISA, the three companies which initially collaborated in the development of this standard. The smartcards based on EMV Standard are being introduced progressively all over the world.

The card brands who created the EMV specifications have implemented global and regional strategies to help achieve the smartcard migration for payment cards. Their focus on smartcard technology is to make it easier to use in national markets, and assure the global interoperability.
